A part of being good parents is knowing how to show love to  your kids. Just like any person, your children may have different love languages that you should definitely keep in mind. Here are the 5 basic love languages:

  1. Touch – some kids find that the more amount of hugs and kisses they get from mommy and dad directly corresponds to how much they are loved. This type also includes cuddles before bed, reading a book on a parent’s lap, or something even as simple as a high five for a job well done.
  2. Gifts – many kids respond to gifts as a good incentive to do well in school, but others see it as a deep sign of love. These gifts can later on hold significant value to the child, especially since it is a concrete extension and proof of your love.
  3. Words of Affirmation – many children need to be positively affirmed and given credit for the things they do in order to feel good about themselves. Kind words will make them feel secure and appreciated, plus words last for a lifetime.
  4. Quality Time – kids can tell if your attention is divided. Some find love through playing sports, watching movies together, going to the Parent- Teacher Conference, and more. Being present, for them, is the biggest present you can give them.
  5. Acts of Service – this may be a bit tricky, since parenting is a 24/7 act of service. Every parent will do anything in their power to provide for their kids, and that includes small and big requests and favors.

Take time to observe your child and see how he or she expresses love to you and to others. Be sensitive to the things they need, and take note of what they ask for the most often. Is it a hug? Or maybe a short ice cream date to pass the afternoon? Or to help complete a puzzle? Whatever it is, always let your child know that he or she is loved and treasured by you and the rest of the family.
