Fragrances stick to our minds so distinctly that just a whiff of a familiar scent immediately sends us a wave of memories and emotions. Scented candles set the aura of the room, and can bring us into a mode of relaxation after a long day at work. By stepping into a person’s car you can already tell if the person is sporty or has that classic pine scent on their seats, or whether the spa infuses the air with lavender, jasmine or other calming essences. Just like rooms, we too have our own distinct odors – some more pungent than others. With the desire to mask these smells comes perfumes, but how can we tell when our perfume becomes too excessive for someone’s taste, or if the scent we chose suits us at all? Here’s a run down of how our perfume contributes to first impressions, amongst other things.

Choosing a fragrance is very personal, especially you of all people will be wearing it and smelling it the entire day. With this, you first have to keep in mind the event for the day. Is it a normal day at work? Are you going out for drinks with friends? Will you attend a fancy ball? This will determine when to use a perfume (longer lasting and usually oil based) or cologne (lesser oil concentration). Try not to be sold so easily on celebrity perfumes: just because your favorite singer has a fragrance line, it does not necessarily mean that it will suit your personality. Once you have chosen a scent pleasing to you, remember the areas where to apply it: at the back of your ears, behind your wrists, at the base of your throat, inside your elbows and behind the knees. Trust us, these spots are proven to keep your scent on for the whole day! Remember to wear your scent – and your whole being – with pride! Confidence is the best way to sell anyone, and don’t forget a smile!
