“Fall 7 times, get back up 8”. Life always has something new to throw at us, no matter how hard we try to stay afloat. But despite these hurdles, unexpected bumps along the road and unforeseen complications – may it be at work, relationships or much deeper personal issues, resilience is the unsung hero to moving forward. For those with kids, I urge you to instil a sense of resilience within your kids through this little guide.

You may be thinking, “what could kids possibly go through for me to teach them about resilience?” Well, although the adult world is immensely different from that of a child’s, it does not mean that their experiences and struggles should be overlooked for it is in those early years wherein their character is formed, as well as their defense mechanism to stress and problems. Let your children feel that you care about what they go through, and that you are ready to listen to the struggles that they face. Knowing they have a support system will give them comfort and strength, and help them realize that they not need to go through it on their own.

By establishing routines, encouraging a sociable behavior, engaging in sports and extracurricular activities, your child will have more opportunities to grow and nurture his or her personality. Acknowledge their strengths, and work on their weaknesses. Nurture optimism and let them know that there is always room for improvement, and in the event that they do fail, guide them into regrouping and restructuring their gameplan. As Thomas Edison said, “I have not failed, I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” It all matters on how much you want to attain your goal, no matter the hardships along the way.
