The highlight of Vienna’s carnival season, and one of Europe’s most glamorous social occasions is the Vienna Opera Ball at the State Opera. International celebrities from the world of the arts, politics and business congregate in this festival of elegance.

At the mention of the words Opera Ball people worldwide think of Vienna, its music, charm and its art of celebrating festivals according to timeless Austrian tradition. The grand entrance of the debutantes with their escorts in a splendidly decorated ballroom is a highlight of the ball. The polonaise, the concert and opening ballet, the dance of the young couples and finally, the first waltz when the elegant guests make their way to the dance floor evoke a world of glamour.

From 1877 until the First World War and again in 1921, the Vienna State Opera was the site of legendary soirees during the carnival season.

The first Opera Ball took place in 1935 until 1939. After World War II and the rebuilding of the Vienna State Opera, the tradition of the Vienna Opera Ball resumed on February 9, 1956.

As the social event par excellence, the Opera Ball enjoys the patronage of the Austrian Federal Government, the Vienna Opera management and the honorary chairmanship of the Austrian Federal President.
