Some makeup brands are proud to say that their products are “cruelty free”, but what does this mean? To put it simply, it means that no animals were harmed or tested in the process of making the products. Some brands use animals to test the effectiveness of their ingredients, and experiment on the possible side effects or damages once applied onto a living organism. Makeup brands that claim to be Vegan, on the other hand, mean that their ingredients are not made from byproducts of animals. Yes, it is possible for products to be both cruelty free and vegan.

Now, why is this such a big deal? Many products in China are required to undergo animal testing by law, but they neglect the ethical implications that their actions bring. For one, it is unethical to torture animals and allow them to suffer in cages alone, afraid, and in pain. With all the advanced technology of our time, scientists could easily disregard the animal testing since there are already enough products in the market with perfected formulas. This is where the hunger for innovation comes in – we constantly want to come up with something new, even at the expense of animals. The chemicals being tested on animals should not be present in the first place since we should all strive to use organic, natural products that do not need the torturing of animals.

Brands that are cruelty free include The Body Shop, Lush, Wet n Wild, Becca, Tarte, Smashbox, Urban Decay,  Bath and Body Works, Too Faced, and more.
