Beauty is often perceived as a passion-driven industry, where individuals are drawn by an inherent love for skincare and cosmetics. However, for Tang, the journey into the beauty world was more circumstantial than a predestined calling.

Growing up surrounded by strong women in her family, Nikki attributes her mother and grandmother as her primary sources of inspiration. Their impact instilled in Nikki the importance of diligence, molding her work ethic from a young age. 

“Hard work has always been instilled in us. It’s a very strong value embedded within our family,” the CEO shares. 

“When I was in elementary school, I frequently assisted as a cashier at my dad’s hardware store in Binondo. My daily motivation revolved around eagerly awaiting a comforting serving of Taho. I lived a very simple life. It was a very humbling experience and taught me the value of working hard.”

Rooted in the tenacity of her upbringing, Nikki’s foray into beauty was shaped by a series of serendipitous events. Her journey serves as a compass for those navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship. Nikki’s wisdom on values, continuous learning, and reinvention resonates, urging individuals to remain true to themselves while adapting to the evolving demands of the world.

Foray Into the Beauty Business

Tang found herself at the intersection of business and beauty when her mother, a frequent traveler with a penchant for self-care, introduced her to world-renowned dermatologist, Dr. Joyce Lim.

Based in Singapore, Dr. Lim’s unique formulations, especially NEOSTRATA, caught the attention of local doctors who later welcomed these breakthrough products into the Philippine market. 

While Tang had just graduated with a degree in engineering with no initial inclination towards dermatology or anything cosmetics-related, it was the entrepreneurial spirit within her family, coupled with a valuable lesson from her aunt about seizing opportunities, that set her on a new path.

“I think the DNA was there to start the business,” Nikki reflects. Encouraged by her mother to explore this opportunity, Nikki, armed with her willingness to embrace challenges, delved into this new endeavor. Her motivation didn’t stem from vanity; instead, it was fueled by the rewards the new venture presented.

Starting as a one-person team, Nikki faced the challenge of introducing “cosmetic pharmaceuticals” to a market not fully aware of skincare backed by science. The timing was crucial, and she emphasized that even with a great product, success depends on the market’s readiness.

You have to always make sure that you’re equipped with values and that you’re willing to constantly learn. You also have to grow and reinvent yourself—not in a way that you lose your identity but in a way to make yourself relevant.

Her ability to balance professional success with personal responsibilities sets a precedent for achieving both professional heights and personal fulfillment. 

“Being an entrepreneur does come with its perks as it grants you control over your time, although you can be a slave to commitments. However, this offers flexibility, so you should know when it’s time to step back.”
