As interesting career quizzes could be, it may not be the wisest idea to choose a career path given to you by an automated or pre-calculated system. We have all grown up with job discrimination and norms as to which professions are the most lucrative, but we also know the saying “follow your passion”, so which is it? Do we go for a job that will make us rich, or one that will make us happy? A study shows that people change their careers around 3 times in their lifetime, but we want to help you narrow these career paths down.

The first step in determining which career path you should take is to know what you like doing, and what you are good at (if they are not already the same thing). Once you’ve got the industry or subject narrowed down to let’s say, science or the arts, you can then proceed to choosing a field. The best way to find out whether you want a certain job or not is by taking an internship. They are short term but they give you a feel of the work environment and what the job entails, minus the commitments. Another way to better determine your career path is to find a mentor that could guide you. He or she has to be someone who knows you well enough and actually cares about your wellbeing, and not just a random business tycoon looking for an eager apprentice.

The key to choosing a career you won’t regret is to be informed. This does not only apply with knowing job specifications and alternatives, but you also have to know yourself and what you are capable of. Yes, by all means, challenge yourself and push yourself to be a better person and professional, but it would be practical to always keep in mind your limitations and skillset as well.
