Can you see your children creating their own business someday or do you wish similar entrepreneurial success for them? Either way, it is important to foster your children’s entrepreneurial skills at an early age. As parents, it is our role to teach our kids core values and hone their skills in creative thinking, problem solving, leadership, and communication.
1. Teaching Core Values
You can start teaching your children core values through everyday tasks. By giving them simple household chores, they can learn values such as responsibility, honesty, and hard work. These values can help them differentiate right from wrong, have a good work ethic, and learn to stand on their own two feet.
Autonomy is important, so let your child call the shots when it comes to simple things like choosing their own outfit or deciding what to get for dinner. This can help in their confidence, leadership skills and decision-making skills. This will be their foundation to becoming independent, well-rounded individuals.
Also, we should instil in them focus – to know what they want. We should find time to teach our children how to set and accomplish their goals. We can ask them to write down and define their goals and then make them choose the one goal that would make the biggest positive impact in their life. That goal should be their main focus. Next, write down the steps necessary to achieve this exciting goal and encourage them to start taking action on those steps immediately. We can make this a fun activity! Remember though that we should praise our children for pointing out small problems or set backs that cause them distress. Brainstorm solutions on how to resolve their troubles. This will teach them to focus on creating positive solutions, instead of focusing on the problem itself. This practice will allow them to create valuable ideas in their future businesses.
2. Honing Entrepreneurial Skills
Passion, determination, and hard work form the backbone of entrepreneurial success – along with adaptability, creative thinking, problem solving, and communication skills.
We entrepreneurs need to be able to juggle various aspects of life and business and wear many different hats through out the day. Adaptability is a skill that I impart on my own children. As much as possible, I expose my kids to a variety of people and environments and I expect them to adapt. They should be attentive to clues of where a particular person is coming from and adjusts their response accordingly.
In the same way,our kids must also learn how to seek out and recognize opportunities and take action on them. This habit will allow them to create profitable ideas in their future businesses and make them aware of the target market.
Strengthening your children’s problem solving and creative skills will come in handy in the future, when they start managing business ventures. To help them hone these skills, you can start brainstorming with them and help them think outside of the box when they encounter difficulties. You can also have fun while teaching creativity through a do-it-yourself crafts activity.
Another enjoyable way to interest them in entrepreneurship is helping your kids start a small business venture over the summer break. It’s a guaranteed way to teach them the value of money, leadership, and communication.
